Our Journey:

Tom and Marinda met in Jo’burg, South Africa, in 1983. Both natives of Zimbabwe (previously known as Rhodesia), they were married in 1985. In the year 2000, armed with little more than hope and determination, they set off for Canada, with dreams of a brighter future for their two children. This was the beginning of a remarkable journey.

Guided by their conviction that "We Become What We Believe," Tom and Marinda settled in Walnut Grove, just outside Vancouver, where support from friends and family helped them settle into their new home.

On a return trip to South Africa, in 2005, Marinda looked out at the South African landscape and was struck by one thought: “I want to take Africa to Canada.”

When Tom and Marinda visited their local South African shop in 2007, they discovered that the owners wanted to sell their North Vancouver location.

African Breese Imports was born in May 2007.

What began as a humble endeavor has blossomed into a family legacy and community hub. With their children and Marinda's parents deeply involved in the business, African Breese has fostered connections that transcend borders.

In December 2012, Tom and Marinda opened a second location in Kitsilano, in response to their clients’ needs, and they have expanded their offerings to include products from countries including Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland. African Breese also showcases and supports talented South African artists and has become a haven for unique treasures.

While Tom and Marinda –and their clients –love the nostalgia and pleasure provided by the products, the focus has always been on connection – on truly seeing their customers, and trying to understand their needs and values.
